Jack Mathes 9/15 LINER NOTES & CREDITS

In the winter/spring of 2017 my wife, Artyce, and I went on a three month road trip
that brought us to Austin and the home of Jim and Leslie Stricklan.
An afternoon at Parrot Tracks Studio with George at the sound board
and Jim guiding the session resulted in the 11 recordings on this CD.
The songs are a combination of older and newer songs.
My music is not about any one time, place, or person.
I don’t write music on purpose I just start playing around and
a song comes out of the guitar. All I have to do is write it down.
Each song is a combination of diverse thoughts and experiences
woven together that reflect me and my life.
Jim blended together some great musicians and instruments that,
combined with George’s mixing, brought a fullness to every song.
Well done all, all done well..

Do Da Di Da Day, It came to me when I was working in Hospice.
Mostly it’s about life, which at best is uncertain, fragile and time limited.
We cope with those unknowns by distraction, denial and delusion.
Truly, life is short. Don’t waste it on hate and fear.
Love yourself, love somebody else and let them love you.
Embrace each moment as if it’s your last cause you never know,
you may be Do DA DI DA Day.

I heard John Prine talk about having a file cabinet where he kept
all the partial lines and phrase’s he might use in a song.
NightBird came from combing several different lines
that I acquired over the years and finally found a theme "that bound them all”.
Mostly it’s about how love's not always easy.

Portland Town popped out after witnessing a friend move out of state
when the cost of living in the Portland area was just too expensive.
It’s hard to make a living playing for tips, meals and making minimum wage.
Mostly it’s about how life's not always easy. Support Live Music in your community.

Roll On Columbia literally jumped out of me
while I was driving my pickup filled with all my household belongings
on my move to Astoria Oregon at the mouth of the Columbia River.
I sang it enough times that I knew it by heart before I got to Idaho.
Mostly it’s about Love and Awe.

Sand In The Water found me by a stream west of Golden CO.
It was a time my life was in change and I found myself being swept along
by events beyond my ability to influence.
Mostly it’s about how life’s not always easy.

Ride That Train is not about a real train.
I’d like to think it could apply to any driving force in a persons’ life.
For me, music is that train.
Mostly It’s about an imaginary train.

Spanish Is The Loving Tongue.
is my humble rendition of a song based on the poem “A Border Affair”
by cowboy poet Charles ‘Badger' Clark,
which hashas been sung and recorded by numerous artists.
Mostly it’s about how love's not always easy.

Song For Shellee is the beginnings of a love song written for his wife
by Steve Brown during the last weeks of his life. I supplied the music and melody.
Mostly It’s about Love and Devotion.

I’m So Blue is just a fun little song.
All the characters are fictional...except me.
Mostly it’s about how loves not always easy.

Too Tall Jim was waiting for me one morning
when I woke up and was in my head.
Took me all of twenty minutes to find the melody and write the lyrics down.
One of the most gratifying experiences of my song writing life.
Mostly it’s about Jim Stricklan.
