MR. LUCKY
2020
CREDITS & LINER NOTES:
This collection of new studio recordings features two of my songs and a few favorites that I’ve wanted to record for years.
I wrote MR. LUCKY in 2019. It was the first of three tunes recorded featuring the JOHNNY STACCATO BAND (George Coyne on guitar, Charles Ditto on keys, and Brian "BC" Cummings on bass) with Kevin Hall on drums. The track gets steamy with Candace Bellamy on vocals and Joey Colarusso on sax.
Candace also sang with me the Hendrix cover, UP FROM THE SKIES. The JOHNNY STACCATO BAND's unique jazzy take on Jimi’s tune, with Kyle Pratt on electric lead guitar, Kevin Hall on drums, and myself on Gretch electric rhythm guitar.
I had long dreamed of a flamenco adaptation of my early roots rocker 1980 LP title track WHERABOUTS UNKOWN, which some may recall. Kyle Pratt saddled up his Taylor nylon string guitar on WHEREABOUTS UNKNOWN 2020 and arranged the smoky version for this cd! Mike Roberts added the fretless bass track.
HIGH CRIMES was written by Larry M. Rothwell and recorded solo on his last album, shortly before he passed in 2008. I wanted to lend my own feel to it here, playing the 000 Martin and singing it live in the studio. The JOHNNY STACCATO BAND filled out the cut, lifted higher by Joey Colarusso on flute.
I finally got around to recording Donovan’s hypnotic tale, SAND & FOAM, after playing it for decades. Some of Donovan’s least known songs remain favorites of mine.
As the WHEREABOUTS UNKNOWN 2020 track suggests, this 20-minute, 5-song project goes full circle. My thanks to all the players who contributed their talents on these memorable sessions, which George Coyne engineered at Parrot Tracks in Manchaca, Texas during the first quarter of this year, just prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
